ringing in our ears

a woman whispers to me in my ear
i will read my poetry for you to hear
so i lean my head humbly to listen to her clear
with the words she brings me to lucidity and fear

where do i begin when the journeys been so long
and the feelings that weÕve felt even now still linger on
when the pain becomes like madness for the wrong that is here
when our song becomes sad and we hear ringing in our ears/a>

born bright but not encouraged to grow
breaks the hearts of children this we know
put us in a room tell us No weÕll find our family dying slow
as i recall the lies the injustice in this land
that could break our spirit and the strengths we have
alone to decide so young to defend
all our dreams and visions of a better life ahead

i think of the men and women not so long ago
who wrote/rode and fought for freedom we have come to know
can we be that brave and with our love to know
these harvests of equality scattered and in row?
can we be that brave and with our love to sow
more seeds of equality scattered and in row?

she takes us through the darkness and onwards to the light
i see myself in her we have all known this flight
we are the eagle and yet have hit the ground
let us become strong while towards the sky weÕre bound
we are the eagle and yet have hit the ground
let us become strong while towards the sky weÕre bound
