if the devil drinks with friends

if the devil drinks with friends then i’d rather dance alone
as evil steals our lives away and our spirits from the soul / soil

dare i tell you a story about this town?
where the devil dances all around
he dances in his madness she wears a good disguise
there’s no telling the difference by the whites of their eyes

i shared my daily bread with you
you bit me in the hand well what am i supposed to do?
you held me when i was down you kicked me when i was up
they say misery loves company but i’ll not be the judge of that

i called you lover till all the lies were too much
till you stabbed me in the back well what’s the good in that?
i’m working for the greater not the lesser of the two so
what the hell would i be doing hanging out with an enemy like you?

you don’t always get what you want and you get what you need
i guess i’ve learnt the awful truth about the world indeed
is it dog eat dog and cat scratch cat
feigning for favors vying for best?

if this is the real world i’ll be going home to Earth
where i’ll not be judged by competitions worth
by the abuses of power or the privilege of birth

if the devil drinks with friends then i’d rather dance alone
as evil steals our lives away and our spirits from the soul / soil

dare i tell you a story about this town?
