carving canoes: for the wild

we burn the bridge and then we learn
and in our graves we will turn
carving canoes to return
to build new bridges we have earned

my youth was stole away
till i went crashing through the waves
reaching out to a friend who could only turn away
. . . with no blame . . . it made no sense anyway

now it’s time to tell the tale
that went from simple to complex
like a puppet on a string
did i deserve the beating then?
rumours of glory rumours of shame
waters and i will clear my name
stand my ground stake my claim
and set the story straight

we burn the bridge and then we learn
and in our graves we will turn
carving canoes to return
to build new bridges we have earned

and so the tale ends to begin to make amends and to redeem
and when my heart is open whole it will not break till i am old
then i’ll lay me down to sleep pray my soul the forest keep
resting in earths abode knowing i did what i could
to walk my talk and laugh a while with family by waters side
future cultures in the round stepping lightly on the wild
stepping lightly all the while for the wild canoe for the wild
